Making Sense of Autism
Travis Thompson. Baltimore, Maryland: Paul H. Brookes Publishing Co., 2007. 266 pages. ISBN 978-1-55766-915-5. Price (USA): $29.95 (soft cover).
Making Sense of Autism contains informative and extensive reference material for parents and caregivers of children on the Autism Spectrum. The author, Travis Thompson, provides accurate information regarding recognizing early signs of atypical behavior in infants and toddlers as well as information about specific approaches to and options for treatment. He gives fascinating detail regarding the latest pharmacological treatments for Autism and related disorders.
It is comforting as a parent to read that Thompson has first-hand experience with parenting (or in his case, grand parenting) a child on the spectrum. By including his own insights, Thompson establishes an immediate and personal connection with the reader.
Thompson also gives conservative, cautionary advice regarding "quick fixes" and "miracle cures" by presenting clear, evidence-based facts and practical intervention methods and approaches that may help caregivers recognize and avoid the emotional pull to surrender to "miracle cures." Making Sense of Autism is a complete package. It is a valuable – and necessary – reference book for parents and professionals.
Review by Diane Creedon, parent of nine-year old Patrick, who has Autism.
